God Works Through Our Mess

📖 TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Genesis 30:22 (NIV)
“Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb.”
Today’s John 15 thread: The Vine doesn’t need perfect branches to produce fruit. Jacob’s life was a long list of wrong choices, deception, and mess. And yet God’s plan kept moving forward. The fruit wasn’t the result of Jacob getting everything right. It was the result of God’s life flowing through him despite everything he got wrong. That’s the grace of abiding — the Vine does the producing, not the branch.
✍️ REFLECTION
If you read Genesis chapters 28–31 honestly, Jacob is not a great person.
He wants Rachel but ends up sleeping with Leah on his wedding night without somehow realising it. He gets drawn into a competition between two sisters that turns his household into a mess. He sleeps with their servant girls. He works twenty years for a father-in-law who keeps changing the terms on him.
It is a story full of broken people making broken decisions.
And right in the middle of all of it — God is working.
Not because Jacob deserved it. Not because Rachel and Leah had it all together. But because God, in His sovereignty, can work through our mess without needing our mess to first be cleaned up.
Q1: Is there an area of your life that feels too messy for God to work through? A relationship that’s complicated, a decision you regret, a season that just hasn’t gone the way you planned? What would it mean to believe that God can work in it anyway?
Look at Rachel in verse 22. She had been barren for years. She had tried everything — even Reuben’s mandrake plants, which was a folk remedy, not faith. She had not trusted God. She had tried to solve her problem her own way.
And then it says: “God remembered Rachel.”
God remembered. He had not forgotten her. Even through her wrong moves, her jealousy, her attempts to fix it herself — He was still listening. And when she cried out to Him, He answered.
Q2: Have you been trying to solve your problem your own way, like Rachel? What would it look like to stop and just cry out to God instead?
This whole season of Jacob’s life is a reminder that God’s plan does not depend on our performance. He told Jacob in chapter 28 that He would be with him and would bring His promises to pass — and He did. Jacob’s choices were often bad. But God’s commitment was firm.
That is not a license to live carelessly. It is an invitation to stop being paralysed by the mess you’re in.
Q3: Looking at your life right now — where can you see God working in spite of the mess, not because everything is perfect? How does that change the way you see what He might still do?
🌿 REMAIN IN HIM
Take a moment before you move on. This isn’t a to-do. It’s an invitation to stay.
Reflect honestly: Where have you been keeping God at arm’s length because you feel like you have to get things sorted before He can work? Bring the honest mess before Him. He already knows it.
Bring it to Jesus: Tell Him: “I don’t have this together. But I’m here. Work through me anyway — not because I’ve earned it, but because You are faithful.”
Trust the Gardener: The Gardener doesn’t wait for the branch to be perfect before He produces fruit. He just needs the branch to stay in the Vine. Stay. That’s all.
🙏 PRAYER
Father, thank You that Your plan is not derailed by my mistakes. Thank You that You remembered Rachel even after all her wrong moves. I know there are areas of my life that are messy. I know I have tried to fix things my own way. Come into the mess, Lord. Work through it. Keep working until Your purposes are complete. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
