God Pleaser or People Pleaser?
Day 54 · Exodus 32:2-4

Exodus 32:2-4 (NIV)
“Aaron answered them, ‘Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.’ So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'”
Today’s John 15 thread: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit.” The branch takes its direction from the Vine, not from what the people around it are asking for. Aaron’s failure was not just that he made an idol. It was that he let the crowd around him tell him what to do when he should have been waiting on God.
✍️ REFLECTION
Moses has been up on the mountain with God for forty days and forty nights. The people get restless. They don’t know what has happened to him, and they don’t want to wait anymore. So they go to Aaron, the high priest, the man left in charge, and they pressure him: make us gods who will go before us.
And Aaron gives in. He collects their gold, throws it into the fire, fashions a calf, and the people say this is the god who brought them out of Egypt. The man who was supposed to lead them closer to God leads them straight into idolatry.
Q1: Has there ever been a time when the people around you, whether under your leadership, in your family, or in your circle, pressured you to do something you knew was not right? How did you respond?
When Moses confronts him later, Aaron’s response is extraordinary in how weak it is. “You know how prone these people are to evil,” he says. “I threw the gold into the fire, and out came this calf.” As if the calf made itself. Aaron cannot even own what he did. He blames the people. He pretends it just happened.
This is one of the clearest warnings in the Bible about a particular kind of leadership failure. The people you are supposed to be leading can end up leading you, if you are not watchful. The pressure they put on you when they are afraid or impatient can be enormous. And if you are more concerned with keeping them happy than with keeping faith with God, you will find yourself doing things you never imagined you would do, and making excuses for it afterwards.
Q2: Have you ever felt the pressure to please the people around you more than God? What did that feel like, and what did you do with it?
There is a simple but hard question worth sitting with today. Are you a God pleaser or a people pleaser? Not in the abstract, but in the specific situations in your life right now where those two things are in tension. Where people are asking you for something that God has not authorized. Where the crowd is restless and waiting, and the quiet of God’s voice feels far away.
Aaron’s mistake was not just a one-time failure. It was the result of not having his identity firmly enough in God that he could hold the line when the pressure came.
Q3: Where in your life right now are you at risk of letting the people around you set the direction instead of God? What would it look like to hold the line?
🌿 REMAIN IN HIM
Take a moment before you move on. This isn’t a to-do. It’s an invitation to stay.
Reflect honestly: Who or what is currently setting the direction in your life? Is it God’s voice, or is it the noise of the crowd around you? Are there people in your life whose approval you are more afraid of losing than God’s?
Bring it to Jesus: Tell Him: “Lord, I don’t want to be led by the crowd. I want to be led by You. Show me where I am more concerned with what people think than with what You are saying. Give me the courage to hold the line.”
Trust the Gardener: The Vine does not change direction because the crowd demands it. Stay connected. Let Him set the direction.
🙏 PRAYER
Father, Aaron’s story is uncomfortable because I recognise myself in it. I know what it feels like to be pressured. I know what it feels like to give in just to make things easier. Forgive me for the times I have led from fear of people rather than faith in You. Make me someone who takes direction from You first, and holds that line even when it is hard. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
