Do Just As He Commands

Exodus 7:6 (NIV)
“Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them.”
Today’s John 15 thread: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit.” The fruit comes through obedience, going where He sends, saying what He says, doing what He commands. Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them. Not half of it. Not the parts that felt comfortable. All of it. That is what fruitfulness looks like in the Vine.
✍️ REFLECTION
It’s a short sentence that is easy to read past: “Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them.” But if you know what God had told them to do, stand before the most powerful ruler in the world and announce plague after plague knowing Pharaoh would harden his heart and refuse, then you understand what that sentence cost. They didn’t negotiate. They didn’t water it down. They didn’t do most of it and skip the parts that felt too bold. They did just as the Lord commanded.
Q1: Is there something God has told you to do that you have been doing partially, the comfortable parts but not the harder parts? What is the part you have been leaving out?
God had been very specific with Moses. He didn’t just say ‘go to Pharaoh and sort it out.’ He told Moses exactly what to say, exactly what Aaron would do, and exactly what Pharaoh would do in response. He even told Moses the outcome in advance: Pharaoh’s heart will harden, it will not go smoothly, you will not see immediate results. Moses went anyway.
That is a particular kind of obedience, the kind that follows God’s instructions even when you already know it won’t look like a win at first. It takes more faith to obey when you know there will be resistance than when you expect easy results.
Q2: How do you respond when God calls you to do something that you know is going to face resistance or pushback? Do you push through or pull back?
There is a statement worth holding onto: if God thought we needed ten suggestions, He would have given ten suggestions. He gave ten commandments because the stakes are real and because He is serious about our flourishing. Complete obedience sounds hard, but think about it from the other side: if you obey completely, you don’t have to worry about whether you got it right. The result is His responsibility. You did your part.
Q3: What would your life look like if you committed, just for this week, to do just as the Lord commanded in every area you are aware of? What would have to change?
🌿 REMAIN IN HIM
Take a moment before you move on. This isn’t a to-do. It’s an invitation to stay.
Reflect honestly: Are there areas of your life where you are obeying God selectively, doing the parts that suit you and leaving the harder parts? Be honest.
Bring it to Jesus: Ask Him: “What is the ‘just as You commanded’ that I have been avoiding? Show me, and give me the courage to do it.”
Trust the Gardener: The branch bears fruit when it follows the Vine’s direction fully. Complete obedience is not about earning, it’s about trusting the Vine enough to go all the way.
🙏 PRAYER
Father, I want to be someone who does just as You command, not half of it, not the easy parts, but all of it. Give me the faith of Moses: to go where You send me even when I know it won’t be smooth, to say what You say even when it is not popular, and to trust the outcome to You because I have done my part. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
