He Will Fight for You

Day 48 · Exodus 14:14

📖 TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Exodus 14:14 (NIV)

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Today’s John 15 thread: Abiding in the Vine sometimes looks like doing nothing. The branch’s job is to stay connected, not to solve the problem, not to force a way through. At the Red Sea, the branch’s job was to be still. The Vine did the fighting. The fruit that came out of that, a whole nation walking through on dry ground, was not produced by the branch. It was produced by the Vine.

✍️ REFLECTION

The situation was impossible. The Red Sea in front of them, Pharaoh’s army behind them with six hundred of Egypt’s best chariots closing in fast, and the people panicking: “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?” And Moses gives them the most unlikely instruction anyone has ever given in a crisis: be still.

Q1: Have you ever been in a situation that felt completely trapped, enemy behind and impossible obstacle in front, where the most faithful thing you could do was be still? How hard was that to do?

Moses could say ‘be still’ because of what he knew about God. He had stood at the burning bush. He had seen ten plagues unfold exactly as God said they would. He had watched plague after plague prove that this God was exactly who He said He was. And in this moment, facing the impossible, Moses drew on every one of those experiences. That is not wishful thinking. That is memory being turned into faith.

Q2: When you face an impossible situation right now, what past experience of God’s faithfulness can you draw on? What has He already done that proves He can do this?

And God does fight. He parts the sea, leads the Israelites through on dry ground, and brings the water crashing down on the Egyptian army. The Israelites’ job in that moment was not to devise a strategy or find an alternative route. Their job was to walk forward, trusting that the God who opened the path would also hold it open until they were safely through. Walking forward in trust when everything looks impossible is not passive. It is one of the most active expressions of faith there is.

Q3: Is God calling you to walk forward in faith right now, to step into the space He has opened even though it still looks impossible? What is one step you can take today?

🌿 REMAIN IN HIM

Take a moment before you move on. This isn’t a to-do. It’s an invitation to stay.

Reflect honestly: What battle are you trying to fight in your own strength right now? Be honest, are you exhausted because you won’t let God fight for you?

Bring it to Jesus: Hand over the battle. Tell Him: “I’ve been trying to fight this myself. I’m tired. You said You would fight for me. I’m going to be still and trust You.”

Trust the Gardener: The Vine fights. The branch rests in the Vine. That is not weakness, that is the design.

🙏 PRAYER

Father, the battle I am in feels impossible right now. I can’t see a way through. But I choose to believe what You said, that You will fight for me, and I need only to be still. I am tired of fighting this in my own strength. So I stop. I hand this over. I will be still and watch You work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

💡 MEMORY VERSE

Exodus 14:14 (NIV): “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

This post is part of the Abide in Him Daily devotional series, reading Scripture through the lens of John 15:1–17. The branch doesn’t manufacture the fruit. It bears it because it stays connected to the Vine.

  • Seventeen Days in the Vine

We didn’t plan to spend seventeen days here. But John 15 has a way of doing that. Seventeen verses — the vine and the branches, pruning, abiding, laying down your life, being called a friend, being chosen — all of it closing with the same sentence it opened with: “Love one another.” This post is a look back at all seventeen days before we move forward. Because John 15 doesn’t end when the series does. It becomes the lens for everything that follows — Genesis to Revelation.
